ESRC Seminar Series Government and Freedom: Histories and Prospects
Seminar 3: Practices and Technologies for Governing Freedom
12 December 2008 at the London School of Economics and Political Science
Convened by Nikolas Rose
This seminar will examine the practices and technologies through which liberal government is made practicable. Some of these have been well charted, notably those that govern through the family, that seek to create and mould autonomy in the schoolroom, and those that attempt to recreate autonomy in those who have lost it, such as the apparatus of psychiatry. Our aim in this seminar is to extend this analysis into new areas, renew our engagement with these issues and explore them in new ways. The speakers will be Samantha Ashenden (Sociology and Politics, Birkbeck College, University of London; Mariana Valverde (Centre of Criminology, University of Toronto); David Saunders (CRESC / Open University); James Hay (Institute of Communication Research, University of Illinois--Champaign-Urbana); Laurie Ouellette (Communication Studies, University of Minnesota).
