ESRC Seminar Series. Studying Elites: theory, evidence, practice.

Bursaries for PhD students.

This ESRC funded seminar series will run over 2009 and 2010.  It is convened by Julie Froud and Michael Moran, University of Manchester, Yuval Millo, LSE and Glenn Morgan, University of Warwick.  The first seminar is scheduled for the University of Manchester on April 24 2009.  The seminar is designed to examine the study of elites from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives,  will combine both theoretical and empirical work, and will be comparative in range.  Seminar 1 (now scheduled for the University of Manchester on 24 April 2009) will examine the theoretical context of elite studies; seminar 2, scheduled for LSE in September 2009 will examine financial elites; seminar 3, scheduled for the University of Warwick for Spring 2010, will examine globalization, global cities and transnational classes; the final seminar on 16 and 17 September 2010 will focus on researching elites in the future.

Eight bursaries for each seminar are available to cover the cost of attendance by registered doctoral students at any university in the UK.  The value of each bursary is £110 per seminar.  We will consider applications from any students in the social sciences or humanities.  To apply to attend one of the first two seminars, please write a paragraph (maximum 200 words) summarising your existing research, and explaining why it would benefit from attendance.  Please also summarise your existing academic qualifications, give your institutional affiliation and name of supervisor, and give current e mail, and snail mail, addresses.  E mail your application to either Michael.moran@manchester.ac.uk or Julie.froud@manchester.ac.uk by 5pm on Monday 2 February 2009.
