The CRESC Annual Conference 2007, hosted by the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC), will be held from 5 to7 September 2007 at the University of Manchester. The University of Manchester has an exceptional record of generating and sharing new ideas and innovations, and is also at the heart of a dynamic and expanding city that attracts an increasing number of students, visitors and businesses every year. Life certainly is for living in Manchester. It's a lively, cosmopolitan city offering you an enviable mix of multicultural attractions, bars and restaurants.

The conference takes place in the Humanities Bridgeford Street on the University of Manchester Oxford Road campus which is about a 15 minute walk from the City Centre. Humanities Bridgeford Street building right at the heart of the University of Manchester campus, near the Manchester Business School and Blackwell’s Bookshop. It is building number 35 on the campus map. The building is wheelchair accessible.

Manchester Airport is one of the largest and busiest in the country, and most major airlines fly into Manchester. The airport is located about 16km south of the city centre, about 30 minutes from the university, The airport has a number of transport links to the city centre: by a fast, frequent 24 hour train link to both Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations, and by bus which runs to Oxford Road and the City centre. There are also regular train services from Manchester to London Euston, and the rest of the UK.

The University of Manchester is located close to both Piccadilly main line station (about two and a half hours from London) and Oxford Road train station, with Victoria train station a little further away.

Piccadilly Station to Sackville Street

Piccadilly station to Oxford Road

The Oxford Road Link bus (no 147) runs from Piccadilly Rail Station across the campus stopping at 14 locations and finishing at Grafton Street. This service runs on weekdays between 7.15am and 6.45pm, at 10-minute intervals, and can be caught from the Fairfield Street entrance to Piccadilly Station.

A taxi from Piccadilly Station to the Oxford Road area of the campus will cost you about £5.

Victoria station to Oxford Road

To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, buses 191 and 197 run from Victoria station (from Corporation Street, outside the Co-operative Bank).

Oxford Road station to Oxford Road campus

To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The campus is a ten to fifteen minute walk. Alternatively, buses stop outside the Palace Hotel.

By Air

Manchester Airport is one of the largest and busiest in the country. It is located about 10 miles (16km) south of the city centre, about 30 minutes from the university.

Travel by bus and coach

National Express coaches serve over 1,200 destinations across the UK from the Chorlton Street Coach Station, which is near Piccadilly railway station and a short walk from both University campuses.

Walk to Whitworth Street as above and catch the 147 Oxford Road link bus to the Oxford Road area of the campus.

Bus and tram

There are local bus services running throughout the Greater Manchester area, together with the Metrolink tram service.


Free Bus

The Oxford Road Link 147 bus offers free travel for University of Manchester staff and students between the Sackville Street and Oxford Road areas of the campus.

The buses run every ten minutes throughout the day, Monday to Friday between 7.15am and 6.51pm.

A single journey costs 50p (outside of the Sackville St and Oxford Rd campus zone) and a Day Rover, giving unlimited travel on the route, costs £1.
