History
Compared to many Oxford Colleges, St Hugh's is young. It was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great niece of the poet. But she had a strong sense of the historical perspective in which her new foundation would take its place. Using money left to her by her father, a bishop of Lincoln, she named it after one of his twelfth century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220, and in whose diocese Oxford had been. Elizabeth Wordsworth was a champion of the cause of womens education, and her foundation was intended to enable poorer women to gain an Oxford education. The first male undergraduates were admitted in 1986.

Traveling to St Hugh's
St Hugh’s college is situated between Canterbury and St Margaret's Road about 15 minutes walk to the north of the centre of Oxford. Oxford can easily be reached from London either by train or bus. London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Birmingham airports are all easily accessible by bus or train.

Arrival by rail
Oxford Station is to the west of the city centre at the end of Park End Street. It is about 20 minutes walk from St Hugh’s. Regular InterCity trains running between Birmingham and London stop at Oxford station as well as regional trains. For up to date times and booking information visit the Network Rail website. If you are a student arriving by train it is advisable to book a seat because the services can be very busy.

Arrival by air
All four major London airports (Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead) are conveniently accessible from Oxford, with Heathrow and Gatwick proving to be the most popular and convenient ones. Birmingham International Airport provides another alternative.

From London
There are regular 24 hour coach services between London and Oxford and both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. They run approximately every 20 minutes during the day and the journey is about 90 minutes. For more information visit the Oxford Tube and the local bus sites.
