Professor Adrian Favell
ESRC/SSRC Visiting Professor, Nov 2009 - June 2010, Manchester
Adrian is Professor of Sociology at UCLA, and currently employed as Professor of European and International Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark. I have a broad interdisciplinary background that spans sociology, human geography, political science, philosophy and comparative literature. I am interested in all work on globalisation, regional integration (in particular the EU), cities, migration and mobility, in Europe, North America, and East Asia. At CRESC, I am developing a project comparing Tokyo, London, Manchester and Yokohama as “creative cities”. This aims to trace the impact of top down policies and bottom up sub-cultures and artistic movements – in both quantitative and qualitative terms, and over a 20/30 year time scale – on the economic and cultural output of each city in a global/regional context. I am also writing a book about Japanese contemporary art and society since the early 1990s. Please see my website for further details: http://www.adrianfavell.com
