Professor Alan Warde

I joined the University of Manchester in September 1999, my previous position being Professor of Sociology at Lancaster University.

Current research is wide ranging, and covers the sociology of consumption, with particular emphasis on food, social stratification and economic sociology. Empirical work employs qualitative and quantitative approaches, and includes comparative methods, social network analysis and correspondence analysis. Theoretical interests include the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, theories of practice, and structuralism.

In CRESC I am convenor of one area of theme one, concerning consumption. I will be engaged on a comparative study of elite consumption. I will also be taking a particular interest in the structure of the cultural elite in the UK, as part of the inquiry into contemporary elites.
