My research interests relate to field work conducted in the Philippines over the last decade and how different Philippine environments – for example forests, mountains, slums, gated communities and shopping malls – provide different coordinating backgrounds or sensoria for the body. I am currently pursuing this idea through partnership with the Environmental Science for Social Change Institute at the Ateneo de Manila.
I am also interested in social theory (particularly critical theory).
I have also been exploring the writings of the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. His engagements with cybernetics and information theory (for example) anticipate in certain respects contemporary conversations across the abysmal divide of the sciences as well as contemporary debates in Religious Studies about the mind and the origins and functions of religion.
