CRESC Research interests
Farida Vis
Farida Vis’ research is centrally concerned with the reporting of global crises, visual culture, research methods, on and offline knowledge practices. She is a Research Associate in Media and Religion at Loughborough University. Currently she is working on a project, lead by Professor Liesbet van Zoonen that examines how YouTube users have responded to anti-Islam film Fitna released on the Internet in March 2008 by Dutch politician Geert Wilders. Specifically the project is concerned with how Web 2.0 technologies allow young people to express their religious and public identities online. She writes a weekly project blog and maintains the project website:
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/ss/research/FITNA/index.html
Before this she was Research Fellow in Transformations in Media, Culture and Economy for nearly five years at the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC). One of her key projects at the centre focused on the use of controversial images in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, analyzing online discussions, specifically those on picture-sharing site flickr as well as responses to the hurricane from citizen journalists. Her PhD, from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) looked at the print media representations, in the American and British press, of the Israel/Palestine conflict following the signing of the Oslo Accords, which started the so-called peace process in 1993. Specifically she looked at the reporting of events of political violence, both Israeli and Palestinian, including the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Whist at MMU her teaching focused on Visual Culture and she continues to teach there as a visiting lecturer.
