Dr Tim Jordan
Research interests
My interests break down into two broad areas; social movements and the social and cultural effects of the Internet.
My current primary area of work is Internet studies. I have completed a grounded theorisation of hacking which includes examinations of cracking, free software/open source and the wide variety of other relevant programming and non-programming hacks. This work has led to theoretical work on the nature of technological determinism. Previous to working on hacking I completed with Dr Paul Taylor an extensive analysis of politically motivated hacking. I am currently exploring the social worlds found among users of massive multiplayer online games, of mobile phones and of pre-Internet letters.
The first area I worked in as part of Cresc was in exploring social movements and popular protest. This produced CRESC Working Paper 7 Social Movements and Social Change and run a one day seminar on the them 'After Social Movements'. I have also recently explored issues of social change and ethics in relation to social movements.
